LUNAR LIGHTNING (Racing)

An exciting debut for 3-year-old colt LUNAR LIGHTNING on August 7, 2025, at Colonial Downs has his partnership dreaming of the future. Trainer Mike Trombetta intended to have the colt make his first start going one mile on the lush green turf of Colonial Downs, but the $87,500 Maiden Special Weight race came off the grass and was contested on the dirt track. Lunar Lightning took to the main track nicely, and he ran very professionally to finish third, beaten only a nose for second, in a steady, workmanlike effort.

His pedigree suggests that he will improve on the lawn. His dam, LUNAR RILLE, was sired by noted turf sire ENGLISH CHANNEL. A homebred for Country Life, LUNAR RILLE earned $120,000 in her career. Her dam is the stakes-producing MALIBU MOON mare FIFTEEN MOONS, who is a half-sister to Grade-1 winner HOOKENONTHEFEELIN.

LUNAR LIGHTNING was foaled at Country Life Farm. Not only is the Maryland-bred program open to him, but he spent six months at the Middleburg Training Center with trainer Chris Kolb in order to become Virginia-Certified, yet another lucrative purse program.
