Country Life has partnered with the stallion-makers of Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky to introduce a new young sire prospect for the 2027 season: 3-year-old PROVENANCE, by 7-time Leading Sire INTO MISCHIEF and out of two-time champion mare MONOMOY GIRL. At the Fasig-Tipton August Digital sale (concluded on Tuesday, Sept. 1), we acquired 6-year-old MEAN SUE, a perfect candidate for PROVENANCE.

A Country Life client who booked his mare to PROVENANCE asked:  “Could he be the best-bred horse ever?”

Spendthrift chose not to send this colt to the Saratoga yearling sales but instead, to prepare him for a stallion career at Spendthrift by shipping him to trainer Bob Baffert in California. As a 2-year-old last summer in Spendthrift’s silks, the beautiful bay colt went wire-to-wire at Santa Anita to break his maiden, but he then suffered a career-ending condylar fracture when placing in the $200,000 Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity.

Spendthrift and Country Life had teamed up 25 years ago with a prospect similar to PROVENANCE in the A.P. INDY colt MALIBU MOON. With 141 stakes winners and still counting, MALIBU MOON seems a worthy model to follow.

Purchased for $22,000, MEAN SUE is being syndicated into a 10-share LLC at $2,200 per share.

Not only was she a wire-to-wire, 4-length maiden winner at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old, but what a “live” family MEAN SUE boasts (click here for her pedigree). Spendthrift Farm bred her ½-sister DEAR DIARY and bought her back for $475,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. DEAR DIARY debuted in Spendthrift silks at Del Mar on Aug. 22 for Hall-of-Fame trainer Richard Mandella; she ran a fast-closing second, prompting her entry in the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Debutante Stakes. MEAN SUE’S stakes-winning 5-year-old ½-sister ALMOSTGONE ROCKET, also sired by INTO MISCHIEF, earned $359,020 before selling as a broodmare prospect for $1.2 million at Keeneland last November. This spring, the Heider Family chose Leading Sire NOT THIS TIME for their million-dollar mare ALMOSTGONE ROCKET.

MEAN SUE’s yearling ½-brother by Spendthrift stallion ARABIAN LION (a son of Triple Crown winner Justify) sells in two weeks at the Keeneland September sale. Icing on the “live” family cake is that the mother of all the above offspring, the Jump Start mare BOUND, is still in production. A stakes winner of $419,174, 15-year-old BOUND was bred to veteran sire QUALITY ROAD for 2027.

Hall-of-Fame horseman John Nerud advised: “Never follow an empty wagon, nothing ever falls off them”. MEAN SUE’S pedigree is full of expensive fruit just waiting to fall off the wagon.

MEAN SUE produced a colt by red-hot, 2nd-crop sire CHARLATAN on April 18 this past spring. She was bred to QUALITY ROAD for 2027 but was offered on the Digital platform as an “open” mare, making her a candidate for an early cover by PROVENANCE.

One final note: Her sire is the DISTORTED HUMOR son JIMMY CREED. The 2nd-Leading Freshman Sire this season is INTO MISCHIEF’s son LIFE IS GOOD, who is out of a DISTORTED HUMOR mare. Favorable nicks everywhere we look on the mating of MEAN SUE to PROVENANCE.
